US 2 brimming with summertime activity – bicyclists, construction crews and motorists will share the road

MONROE – From Monroe to Stevens Pass, US 2 will be bustling with activity this summer. WSDOT crews will work on a variety of safety and road preservation projects and hundreds of bicyclists will ride through the corridor during several touring events.

“Whether you’re traveling during the week or weekend, US 2 will be busy this summer,” said WSDOT Project Engineer Dave Lindberg. “Everyone needs to stay alert, obey the rules of the road and be courteous.”

Crews will improve safety on US 2 and extend the lifespan of the highway by installing rumble strips and high-visibility striping, stabilizing a hillside beneath the highway, repairing a slide, building a new bus pullout in Sultan and updating signs along the highway.

“We have a busy construction season on US 2 this summer,” said Lindberg. “We’re looking forward to starting these important safety improvement projects and ask for everyone’s patience as they travel through the corridor.”

Drivers will also see many bicyclists traveling on US 2 on the following dates:

  • June 30 – July 1: Sea to Sea Bicycle Tour - approximately 170 participants
  • July 13 – 14: Cycle Washington Adventure Tour - approximately 70 participants
  • July 16 – 17: Redspoke Bicycle Tour - approximately 120 participants
  • July 19: Seattle to Spokane (S2S) - approximately 50 participants
  • Aug. 3 – 4: Courage Classic Bicycle Tour - approximately 700 participants

Those traveling along US 2 should allow themselves extra time, especially during weekdays. To avoid long delays for both motorists and bicyclists on US 2, most of the work will be done during the day, when traffic volumes are at their lowest. Bicyclists can expect rough pavement, lane and shoulder closures and flaggers in work zones.

Please be alert and slow down as you travel through these active construction zones. Always wait for direction from flaggers or the automated roboflagger and only enter lanes when it is safe to do so. Check our construction Web site for specific closures: www.wsdot.wa.gov/Northwest/Snohomish/Construction/.
