OLYMPIA – Crews begin a $1.25 million chip-seal project in Thurston and Mason counties next week.

The contractor, Doolittle Construction of Bellevue, begins work Monday, May 19 and is scheduled to finish the end of July. Chip sealing involves applying a protective layer of liquid asphalt and gravel to the road surface.

Crews will perform this work on two different state routes:

• SR 300 in Mason County, from Belfair State Park to SR 3.
• SR 507 in Thurston County, an eight-mile stretch from the county line to Old Highway 99.

Motorists should expect single lane closures and one-way, alternating traffic. This work is weather dependent.

Chip sealing repairs roadway damage and extends the life of the roadway. This treatment improves safety for drivers by creating a highly skid-resistant surface and reducing glare. To learn more about the chip-seal process, visit www.wsdot.wa.gov/regions/eastern/chipseal.
