SEATTLE – Puget Sound drivers will have wide eyes this weekend as a 480,000 pound “superload” boiler makes the trip through Bellevue and Seattle on its way to Ferndale.
Drivers will only see this semi between the hours of 2:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. The oversize load will move at night when fewer drivers are on the road and there is less congestion.
The load will head west on I-90 from North Bend about 2:30 a.m. on Saturday and exit to I-405 before meeting up with northbound I-5 in the Lynnwood area. The superload will exit in Bellingham because of a height restriction on I-5.
The load is about 213 feet long and 21 ½ feet wide. It will be accompanied by Washington State Patrol troopers and private escort vehicles.
WSDOT required the truck to meet permit requirements before traveling to protect the public’s investment in the state’s highway system. Meeting the permit requirements helps reduce the potential for damage to roads and bridges. All truckers are held to the same standard.
In 2007, 151,387 special motor vehicle permits were approved for 2,091 Washington truckers and dozens more hailing from 32 sister states. Of those permits, 1,401 were approved super load permits.
