CHEHALIS – Motorists traveling I-5 southbound in Lewis County over the Cowlitz River Bridge (milepost 59.06) will experience a right lane closure today as crews replace a steel beam underneath the bridge, announces the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Crews initially closed the right lane just before 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening after a WSDOT Maintenance Technician reported a pothole on the bridge. WSDOT Bridge Crews conducted a thorough inspection last night and found that a steel beam had become dislodged underneath the bridge. Steel beams provide support to the concrete deck, and if damaged, can create potholes on the deck surface.

Today’s right lane closure is necessary for maintenance crews to safely replace the damaged steel beam. The lane will remain closed until early this evening. WSDOT is replacing the damaged steel beam to increase safety for travelers and extend the life of the Cowlitz River Bridge.

Motorists are asked to slow down and pay attention when traveling through the work zone. Motorists can help maintain traffic flow and posted speeds by merging into the appropriate lane prior to approaching the work zone.

Advanced warning signs will be posted during the slowdowns. Motorists are asked to please pay attention to the warning signs and are also reminded that traffic fines double within a construction work zone when workers are present (RCW 46.61.527).
