SEATTLE – Crews will perform a routine quarterly inspection of the Alaskan Way Viaduct on January 15 and 16, 2008. No lane closures will be required.

On January 15 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., drivers will see Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) crews inspecting the viaduct from below the structure. Crews will check for growing cracks and other damage. On January 16 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., survey crews will measure for additional settlement of the columns between Columbia Street and Yesler Way.

In addition to the inspection, construction began in October to stabilize the columns in the one-block area between Columbia Street and Yesler Way, where the viaduct has settled approximately five inches since the Nisqually earthquake. The repairs, which are scheduled for completion in April, will limit settlement and prevent further damage to the structure. This is the first of six safety and mobility projects designed to repair or replace about half of the deteriorating viaduct.

WSDOT crews conduct visual inspections every three months to monitor the viaduct’s condition and keep drivers safe. WSDOT will release inspection results on Wednesday, January 23. For more information about the Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall Replacement Program, visit the Web page.
