TRAVEL ADVISORY

Wet heavy snow brings delays due to avalanche control on Snoqualmie Pass

WSDOT controlling avalanches in several locations, expect delays throughout the afternoon

A heavy snow warning is in effect for the Washington Cascades. Weather experts predict the heavy snow will turn to rain by noon.

Avalanche Forecasters are working quickly to bring down the heavy snow in a controlled manner at several locations along I-90 near Snoqualmie Pass to reduce the risk of snow slides hitting the roadway unexpectedly.

WSDOT crews are working with the Washington State Patrol (WSP) to stop traffic at several locations to keep traffic out of avalanche zones during avalanche control work.

WSDOT anticipates closing I-90 in several locations throughout the afternoon to complete the control work all across Snoqualmie Pass.

Drivers need to be prepared for long delays and traffic back-ups, as well as slick and snowy roads.

WSDOT is prepared to do battle with the elements. Snowplows, snow blowers, and graders will be working day and night. Despite our best efforts, it is likely our crews will not be able to keep up with this predicted storm event.

Pass conditions will likely require vehicles to use tire chains. During “chains required” conditions, Washington State Patrol will be slowing traffic to check for chains on vehicles crossing Snoqualmie pass.
