VANCOUVER β Repairs to storm-damaged US 101 will begin on Monday, January 14, announced the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). US 101 from the north span of the Astoria-Megler Bridge (mile post 0.44) to the east side of the Fort Columbia Tunnel (mile post 2.75) will have a lane closure, with the remaining lane alternating between directions. The lane closure will only be effective during daylight hours. Drivers should expect delays of up to 20 minutes due to the lane closures necessary to perform this emergency contract work.
The closures are necessary to repair the damaged roadside, where supporting rocks washed away during the December storm, compromising the stability of the roadway above. The high winds and heavy rainfall, which occurred in early December, caused significant erosion of these large rocks, known as βrip-rap.β Rip-rap supports the roadway from settling and eroding into the water. Replacing it, especially before another winter storm can hit, is essential in order to block further erosion.
The work will be performed during daylight hours, and work is expected to last approximately two weeks. This emergency project is estimated to cost approximately $300,000.
Advanced warning signs will be posted and flaggers will be on site. Motorists are asked to please pay attention to the warning signs.
