Port Townsend - As a direct result of implementing passenger-only service on the Port Townsend/Keystone as replacement of the steel electric car ferry, Washington State Ferries has amended their standard fall schedule for this route in order to connect with local transit services.

The new schedule, which begins Tuesday, November 27, 2007, includes nine round trips.

The aluminum-hulled M/V Snohomish may not be able to run in high winds. A contingency plan is currently being developed.  The vessel carries 149 passengers.

Free Park and Ride lots are available at both terminals. Parking by permit only will be available at the Keystone Terminal on Whidbey Island.

The passenger fares will remain the same on this route, $2.60 one-way full fare. Wave2Go multi-ride cards are also accepted.

Jefferson Transit provides bus service at the Port Townsend Terminal every 20 minutes and Island Transit provides service on the Keystone side every hour on the half hour.

"We're doing our best to help people get where they need to go while the Steel Electric ferries are out of service," said WSDOT Secretary of Transportation Paula Hammond. "I know that life without the Steel Electrics is difficult, but we must ask for continued patience as we work to resume vehicle ferry service between Port Townsend and Keystone in the months ahead."

To better serve passengers during this time, WSF is also coordinating with regional transit providers to help riders set up temporary vanpools and other services. Customers on Whidbey Island can call Island Transit at (360) 321-6688 ext. 3 (or toll free at 800-240-8747) to set up a temporary vanpool. Other transit agencies can help customers discuss their options, including Jefferson Transit (800-371-0497) and Kitsap Transit (800-501-7433).

Other measures have also been put in place to relieve the loss of vehicle service on the Port Townsend-Keystone route. These include:
