ANACORTES – WSDOT wants to hear how the public would like to improve the Sharpes Corner intersection of State Route 20.
An upcoming open house offers the community an early look at improvement options, a chance to meet the design team, and an informal setting to comment and offer suggestions.
Open house
• 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 15
• Anacortes Middle School library, 2200 M Ave., Anacortes
• Use the front parking lot and entrance to the school
Sharpes Corner is the intersection of SR 20 and the SR 20 Spur. An average 30,000 drivers use the intersection daily, traveling to and from Oak Harbor, Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, Anacortes, San Juan island ferries and more.
The intersection experiences heavy congestion and severe backups and collisions, and conditions are expected to worsen as population and traffic increase in the area.
Engineers have designed six different intersection improvements: four designs use bridges or ramps; one is a two-lane roundabout; and one is a modified intersection with different turn lanes and lights. Only the roundabout and modified intersection could be built with the current budget.
The state has earmarked $21.9 million for improvements, and construction is scheduled to begin in 2012.
Those who are unable to attend the open house can view improvement options and comment online by going to the SR 20 Sharpes Corner Interchange project page http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/SR20/SharpesCornerInterchange/.
