EVERETT – If the weather remains dry tonight, crews working on the I-5 Everett HOV freeway expansion project will close northbound I-5 at the SR 526 interchange. All traffic will use a short detour by exiting at SR 527 and back to northbound I-5 at the on-ramp from SR 527. Late night drivers should plan extra time into their trips.

Crews will begin closing lanes of northbound I-5 at 9:30 p.m. All lanes will be closed by 11:00 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Wednesday.

When this weekend’s work is complete drivers will notice a change in the way the right lane ends just north of SR 526 (see image below). Currently, the lane ends with a merge. By Wednesday morning the lane will end as an ‘exit only’ lane at the Boeing Freeway. This change will improve safety by eliminating the need for two lanes of cars to merge into one lane.

The I-5 Everett HOV freeway expansion project is on schedule to be complete by June 2008. When finished, drivers will have new HOV lanes in both directions and other improvements between SR 526 and the Snohomish River Bridge.
