LAKE FOREST PARK - Signal crews activated a new signal system at NE 153rd Street on SR 522 in Lake Forest Park this morning. This was the final milestone in a project that improves transit access, traffic flow and safety on this busy stretch of SR 522.

"Safety and mobility are key elements of this project," said Project Engineer Dave Lindberg. "A new transit pullout provides a safer location for buses to pick up riders with fewer traffic and transit delays. The new signal allows pedestrians safer access to the transit stops on both sides of the roadway."

Tri-State construction crews also replaced two-way center turn lanes with concrete medians to reduce the likelihood of collisions and constructed sidewalks to enhance pedestrian safety. Crews began construction in fall 2006 and pushed hard to complete this project a month ahead of schedule.

"Our contractor has worked very hard throughout the year to complete this project with minimal effects on the traveling public and neighborhoods surrounding the project," said Lindberg. "I would like to thank the surrounding community for their ongoing patience through the roadway closures, shoulder closures and traffic switches necessary for successful completion."

This $8.5 million project is one of several projects collectively known as the SR 522 - I-5 to I-405 Multimodal Project, designed to improve transit access, mobility and safety for drivers and pedestrians along the SR 522 corridor. Similar projects are underway or complete in Kenmore, Bothell and Seattle. For more project details, please visit:
