MALTBY – Traffic on State Route 9 between Woodinville and Maltby was separated by a median for the first time the morning of Friday, Sept. 28. Crews widening the highway shifted northbound traffic to the newly paved east side of the road as they finish work on curbing and the raised median.

Thursday night, crews shifted the northbound lane of traffic to the east of the median. To complete this shift, they needed to relocate traffic signals and finish striping the new configuration. This required SR 9 to be reduced to one open lane from SR 522 to SR 524, while flaggers alternated traffic in the open lane from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Once crews complete work on the raised median, they will shift the southbound lane towards the median to gain access to the shoulders. This will allow crews to safely continue work on connecting driveways, mailboxes and utilities. This shift will occur in the next few weeks.

“We’re coming down the home stretch,” said Project Engineer John Chi. “If Mother Nature cooperates, we could have two lanes open in both directions in November.”

After the new lanes are opened, crews will still need to close lanes to work on installing signs, signals, planting and complete other finishing work. Crews will also continue to widen the ramps between SR 522 and SR 9 which requires daytime lane closures, and occasional nighttime ramp closures.

This project is funded with $40.5 million from the 2003 Legislative Funding Package. For more information, visit www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/SR9/sr522_212thst.
