BATTLE GROUND – Motorists driving State Route 502, also known as NE 10th Avenue, will notice a new signal in operation Tuesday, August 21. The new signal will be turned on at 10:30 a.m., marking an important safety improvement to this intersection.
This is one portion of SR 502 that had been identified as a High Accident Corridor, a term that identifies a collision rate that is greater than normal. Community input, along with collision data that supported a need for this signal, played a role in the funding of this signal installation. This intersection experienced 12 collisions in a three-year period, from 2002-05, resulting in 20 injuries and one fatality. With the installation of this signal, collisions at this intersection are expected to decrease.
Signal installation began this past June by Northeast Electric, LLC. Along with installation of the traffic signal, construction includes adding pedestrian crosswalks and installing illumination at the intersection and left turn pockets. Motorists should expect intermittent flagging and lane closures between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. while the signal is turned on and adjustments are made.

Editor’s Note: Interested members of the media may join WSDOT at the intersection for photos when the new signal switch is turned on. Proper safety gear will be required. Please contact Alissa Bateman, WSDOT Communications, at (360) 905-2078 if planning to attend.
