EVERETT – Drivers heading south on Interstate 5 through Everett late Saturday night and early Sunday morning should expect delays and a detour, or plan to use alternate routes. Contractors will be working on a new bridge that is part of Sound Transit’s new South Everett Freeway Station.

At 8 p.m. Saturday, crews will close the left southbound I-5 lane between SR 527 and 128th Street SE. They will close the adjacent lane at 10 p.m. and the remaining lanes at 11:59 p.m. Traffic will be detoured off southbound I-5 onto SR 527 (19th Avenue SE / Bothell-Everett Highway) and will re-enter the freeway at 128th Street SE. Crews will reopen one lane at 7 a.m. Sunday, and all southbound lanes will reopen by 10 a.m.

During the closure workers will remove the temporary wooden bridge supports from the bottom of the new 112th Street SE bridge deck over the freeway. This is the same type of work that crews completed over northbound I-5 last month. Removing the supports requires the closure of southbound I-5 to keep drivers safe.

WSDOT and Sound Transit have teamed up with the city of Everett to remove and replace the 112th Street SE bridges over I-5 with new, wider bridges as part of the South Everett Freeway Station project. The project, scheduled for completion in late 2008, will allow buses, carpools and vanpools to go directly from the I-5 HOV lanes to a new 400-stall park-and-ride lot in the I-5 median at 112th Street SE. A new access road from 112th Street SE will allow solo drivers to reach the park-and-ride.
