SEATTLE - This weekend, WSDOT bridge crews will close lanes to perform annual maintenance on the ship canal bridge deck on Interstate 5. The work starts early and is noisy.

  • Crews will close two lanes on southbound I-5 from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday, July 21.
  • Crews will close two lanes on southbound I-5 from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday, July 22.
  • Two lanes will remain open at all times on the bridge. We do not expect congestion.

During the closures, crews will remove failing concrete, repair potholes and perform other repairs needed on the bridge deck.

Residents in the Eastlake neighborhood will notice the noise early both weekend mornings. Crews use jackhammers and generators to power the equipment. Maintenance crews will take several steps to minimize noise including reducing the levels of back up warning beepers.
To keep traffic moving WSDOT will open the express lanes early in the southbound direction both weekend days.
Crews realize the noise in an inconvenience to local residents, but this annual work is vital to maintaining this important bridge.
