TACOMA – Washington State Department of Transportation, together with Kiewit-General, Port Angeles Chamber of Commerce, Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce and Washington State Patrol, won the National Partnership for Highway Quality (NPHQ) "Making a Difference" 2006 State Winner award in the Public Communications category.
This new award category recognized the team’s outstanding Hood Canal Bridge August 2005 Closure Outreach public communications achievements that helped the drivers and communities that depend on the Hood Canal Bridge successfully navigate the August 2005 bridge closures. The team was honored for maintaining safe travel through work zones by completing well-planned public communications about project activities and how to use alternate routes.
Each team member was essential to success of the public communications efforts. Their individual contributions included:
Kiewit-General: Selecting closure dates based on community input; sharing project information; supporting media efforts; and, completing the work ahead of schedule.
Port Angeles Chamber of Commerce: Sharing information through Chamber functions, hosting a community open house to receive closure date feedback, posting information on web sites, and providing travelers alternate transportation information.
Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce: Sponsoring Port Townsend/Seattle and Port Ludlow/Kingston passenger-only ferries, sharing information through Chamber functions, and hosting a community open house to receive closure date feedback.
Washington State Patrol: Communicating traffic information to the media, monitoring alternate route traffic, and providing traffic control at high-traffic intersections.
This team continues to conduct public communication efforts together, sharing information about the six-week May-June 2009 Hood Canal Bridge closure with the Peninsula community.
NPHQ is a partnership of federal and state highway officials and leaders in the roadway industry who advocate customer-centered practices for roads that are completed quicker, ride better, last longer, reduce congestion and improve safety. For more information, visit www.nphq.org.
