BINGEN – The Chamberlain Safety Rest Area on SR 14 in Klickitat County will reopen its restrooms this afternoon (Mar. 29) with no water available to the public, but operable toilets, announced the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). The rest area is located on SR 14 just east of Bingen.

The restrooms closed March 23 when the Department of Health, unexpectedly, closed the water system down due to contamination. The Department of Health has given permission for the restrooms to reopen to the public, using water for the toilets only and waterless hand sanitizer in the restrooms.

A better filtration system is being installed. Design on the new filtration system is underway—it is not known how long repairs will take at this time. WSDOT appreciates the patience of the traveling community as these needed improvements are being made.
