EVERETT – Everett drivers crossing I-5 overnight will need to use routes other than 112th Street SE for the next couple of weeks. Starting Monday, crews will close the two-lane street nightly to work on supports for new, wider 112th Street bridges over I-5.

From Monday night, Jan. 29, through Friday morning, Feb. 2, street closures are scheduled as follows:

  • 7 p.m.  Crews will reduce 112th Street SE to one lane with flaggers alternating traffic eastbound and westbound.
  • 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.  Both lanes of 112th Street SE will be closed. Signed detours will be in place.  Both lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. for the morning commute.

These closures may also occur Saturday night, Feb. 3, and Monday night through Friday morning of the following week, Feb. 5 through Feb. 9. Please visit www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/I5/SouthEverett for updates.

There will be no lane closures on I-5. These street closures are necessary for crews to drill shafts and install shoring for construction of the new bridges.

Bridge construction also requires crews to close a section of the Interurban Trail along the west side of I-5, where the trail passes under the bridge. Pedestrians and bicyclists will be directed around the closed portion of the trail via a signed detour route. The trail will remain closed while crews build the new bridge and demolish the old bridge. Engineers expect this to take approximately one year.

This work is part of the Sound Transit-funded I-5 South Everett Freeway Station Project.  WSDOT and Sound Transit have partnered with the city of Everett to remove and replace the 112th Street SE bridges over I-5 with new, wider bridges as part of this project.  The project, scheduled for completion in late 2008, will allow buses, carpools and vanpools to go directly from the I-5 HOV lanes to a new 400-stall park-and-ride lot in the I-5 median at 112th Street SE.  A new access road from 112th Street SE will allow single-occupant vehicles to reach the park-and-ride.
