KELSO – Fence repairs and debris removal along State Route 4 near Stella will begin Jan. 22, announced the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). Motorists should expect daytime single lane closures with minor delays.

Maintenance crews have been monitoring this location since November’s heavy rain. The fence adjacent to the roadway has been put to use, as it has caught a large amount of rock and debris which dislodged recently from the slope after heavy rains and winter weather wreaked havoc in Southwest Washington. Because of the unusually large amount of debris, the fence was damaged and requires repair, as well as debris excavation. WSDOT maintenance crews will repair the fence and remove the debris. The project is expected to last five days; however, the work is dependent upon mild weather conditions.

The location of this work is at milepost 50, near Stella. It is located just to the west of the portable traffic signal where a repair project will begin in the next few weeks (milepost 50.9.) Motorists should expect a flagger at this location, and a portable traffic signal at the location less than a mile away.

The unusually heavy rain this winter has led to a significant amount of debris on various stretches of State Route 4. The fencing at this location helped to catch debris. Through emergency contracts, two SR 4 emergency projects have recently been completed; one near Rosburg in Wahkiakum County, and the other just east of this location (milepost 53.) Motorists will notice another repair project at milepost 50.9, also near Stella in the coming weeks; currently, the highway is reduced to a single lane at that location to protect motorists.
