OLYMPIA –Drivers traveling on I-5 in Olympia should be prepared for delays as WSDOT crews close the northbound inside lane from Pacific Avenue to Sleater Kinney, and the southbound inside lane from Martin Way to Lilly Road on Thursday, Jan. 4.

The lane closures are necessary so crews can place temporary concrete barrier in the median to protect workers as they repair a clogged storm drain. The clogged drain is not allowing rain water to drain from the area, creating the potential for water over the roadway. WSDOT is temporarily dealing with the problem by pumping the accumulating water around the site until a permanent fix can be made.

Crews will close the northbound lane beginning at 7 p.m. to set the barrier wall. Once the northbound wall is in place, the lane will reopen. WSDOT will then close the southbound inside lane and begin work installing the southbound wall. Crews expect to complete work in both directions by 7 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, however drivers should allow for extra drive-time in the event the work takes longer than anticipated.

Motorists are reminded to watch for workers in the area and drive the posted 60 mph – speed limit since traffic fines double in work zones.
