FERNDALE – The snow has been falling hard in Whatcom County all day and WSDOT crews have been out in full force. All 15 trucks in the Whatcom County area fleet are out plowing, sanding and deicing roads. Crews will be out around the clock – working 12 hour shifts.
Collisions on I-5 earlier in the day slowed traffic. High winds prevented WSDOT crews from sanding in several locations. The storm is expected to continue with 3 – 7 more inches of snow by tomorrow. WSDOT Maintenance Supervisor, Ron Morton, advises “If you don’t have to be out on the roads stay home. Our crews will be out all night working on the roads but with more snow on the way; tomorrow morning is expected to be a difficult commute.”
Drivers are keeping speeds low, down to 30 to 35 miles per hour on I-5. Crews will continue to concentrate their efforts on I-5 throughout tonight, but drivers are still advised to drive for the conditions. Posted speed limits are for dry conditions only, so drivers should slow down and take lots of extra time to reach their destinations. Drivers should also watch out for ice on overpasses, ramps and around curves.
