Tracy Paul, WSDOT Aviation Registration, (360) 651-6300
It's that time of year again. Washington State aircraft registrations will expire on December 31, 2006. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Aviation invites you to avoid the holiday rush and renew your aircraft registration today.
For your convenience, you can Renew Your Registration Online. WSDOT also accepts renewals by mail or in person. Please visit our Web site for more information: www.wsdot.wa.gov/aviation.
Why Should You Register?
State aircraft registration is required by law, but do you know how your registration fees are used? WSDOT Aviation relies on aircraft registration revenues to keep our airports safe and usable. Through its Local Airport Aid Grant Program, WSDOT awards maintenance and improvement grants to airports throughout the state. Most of WSDOT’s grants are used at smaller airports that are ineligible to receive federal funds. However, the department also uses its relatively small amount of state funds to leverage millions of dollars in federal grants. In essence, your state aircraft registration fees are used to preserve Washington's aviation system and maintain the facilities you fly into.
Airport Project of the Month
Here is an example of a recent airport project that shows where your registration dollars are going:
Project: Kennewick Airport (Vista Field) – Runway Crack Seal and Slurry Seal
Location: Kennewick / Benton County
Why was this project necessary? Pavement surfaces at airports need continual maintenance to preserve the life of the asphalt. Vista Field’s runway had developed numerous cracks over the last several years that needed to be filled in order to preserve the life of the asphalt. Once the cracks were sealed the entire runway surface received a slurry seal to seal the runway pavement, further preserving and protecting the asphalt.
Completed: October 2006
Benefits: This project will result in a longer life of the asphalt on the airport’s primary aircraft movement area.
Total State Funds Awarded: $171,024
