LAKEWOOD – On November 14, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will host an informational open house in Lakewood for the Point Defiance Bypass Project.

Lakewood Fire Station 20, Commissioners’ Room
        10928 Pacific Highway Southwest
        4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The bypass project re-routes Amtrak trains away from the slow, curved tracks and single-track tunnels they now travel along Puget Sound. The trains will run on a rail line closer to I-5 that is currently used primarily for freight. The project is located along an 18-mile rail corridor owned by Sound Transit and includes:

  • A new second track between South Tacoma and Lakewood.
  • New rails, ties, and ballast between Lakewood and Nisqually.
  • Improved connection to the main line near Nisqually.
  • Safety improvements at several road/rail (at-grade) crossings, where the rail line and the road cross one another at the same level.

Part of the proposed bypass route is the same route that Sound Transit will use to extend Sounder commuter rail to Lakewood.

The public will have the opportunity view project displays and speak with WSDOT staff about the project. For more information on the Point Defiance Bypass Project, visit: www.wsdot.wa.gov/projects/rail/PNWRC_ptdefiance.
