BURLINGTON – Drivers on State Route 20 may notice utility crews moving poles and lines away from the highway over the next couple months between Fredonia Road and Higgins Airport Way. Crews are moving the utilities to make way for construction scheduled to start next spring on SR 20.
WSDOT cautions motorists to watch for construction vehicles entering or exiting the highway, and to not be distracted by the activities. The utility work will be done south of the highway and should not cause delays.
Starting in spring 2007 crews will spend two years converting SR 20 from a narrow and congested two-lane roadway into a safer and more efficient four-lane highway, from the junction of SR 536 to the Interstate 5 interchange. WSDOT will modify the interchange to help move drivers more safely and smoothly through the area.
The first stage of the project, which begins next spring, will widen the highway from Fredonia to just east of Higgins Airport Way. Construction near the I-5 interchange will begin spring 2008.
