TACOMA – The westbound 38th Street off-ramp from northbound I-5 will reopen Thursday morning, welcome news for those who work and shop at the Tacoma Mall.
Crews closed this exit to the Tacoma Mall and surrounding businesses in early October for reconstruction of the 38th Street ramps. Reconstruction of the ramps was required to match the revised alignment of the widened I-5 lanes through downtown Tacoma.
The ongoing widening project minimizes the weaving traffic on mainline northbound I-5 at the SR 16 curve, among the highest accident locations in the state. Four new northbound collector-distributor lanes will improve safety and mobility through the corridor as drivers merge from 38th Street and SR 16, and exit to downtown Tacoma.
This project is on budget and on schedule for completion in spring of 2008.
