TACOMA – Overnight Friday, crews will close the two right lanes of northbound Interstate 5 through downtown Tacoma and the SR 16 ramp to northbound I-5 for paving work.
The I-5 lanes and the SR 16 ramp are scheduled to be closed between 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20 and 9 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 21, weather permitting. Drivers from SR 16 who want to go north on I-5 will be detoured south to 56th Street, then back to northbound I-5.
All workers and equipment are expected to be off the freeway by 9 a.m. Sunday. Drivers are asked to please drive carefully through the work zone.
This stretch of freeway is a part of the ongoing I-5 widening project in Tacoma, which eliminates one of the highest accident locations in the region by adding four new collector-distributor lanes. The new lanes will allow drivers to merge, maneuver and exit from 38th Street, SR 16 and to downtown Tacoma without the weaving traffic that currently occurs on mainline northbound I-5 at the SR 16 curve.
