TACOMA – Overnight Friday and Saturday, crews will close the three left lanes of northbound Interstate 5 through downtown Tacoma and the SR 16 ramp to northbound I-5 for paving work near M Street.

The I-5 lane closures will occur between 48th Street and the Interstate 705 ramp. The scheduled times for the closures are:

• 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13 – 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14
• 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 – 9 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 15
• SR 16 ramp to northbound I-5 will be closed 10 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday. There is a possibility crews will need to close the ramp overnight Saturday, as well. Drivers from SR 16 who need to go north will be detoured to 56th Street.

All workers and equipment are expected to be off the roadway by 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Drivers are asked to please drive carefully through the work zone.

Starting Friday, workers will grind off a section of deteriorating asphalt in preparation for the new overlay, which will be placed starting Saturday night, weather permitting.

This stretch of freeway is a part of the ongoing I-5 widening project in Tacoma, which eliminates one of the highest accident locations in the region by adding four new collector-distributor lanes. The new lanes will allow drivers to merge, maneuver and exit from 38th Street, SR 16 and to downtown Tacoma without the weaving traffic that currently occurs on mainline northbound I-5 at the SR 16 curve.
