AUBURN – Today’s “DOT days of fall” highlights a construction milestone on the SR 167 safety and congestion improvement project near Auburn.

October 11, 2006

  • WSDOT will open the new northbound SR 167 carpool lane between SR 18 and 15th Street NW in time for the morning rush hour on Thursday, Oct. 12.
  • Crews reached this milestone earlier than the scheduled spring 2007 opening date.
  • The final striping for this section of road isn’t in place.  Drivers should expect to see crews striping again next spring.
  • The lane opening is part of a WSDOT project to widen northbound SR 167 through Auburn. When construction is complete there will be a continuous northbound carpool lane from the Auburn Super Mall to I-405.
  • WSDOT plans to open the remaining section of the carpool lane from SR 18 to 15 Street SW in summer 2007. For more information, visit www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/SR167/HOV15thSW_15thNW.

What’s next for SR 167?

This winter, crews will focus their efforts on expanding the bridge over SR 18. Once they complete the bridge work, WSDOT will open the carpool lane from 15th Street SW through SR 18.

Crews also will widen most on-ramps between 15th Street NW and S. 180th Street in Renton to add HOV bypass lanes, and add or upgrade ramp meters. The project is funded through the 2003 Nickel Funding Package. WSDOT expects to complete work on the $40.4 million project in fall 2007.

As the days get shorter and cooler, WSDOT is wrapping up the busy 2006 construction season. Through October, crews will race to finish up weather dependent portions of projects before the rain hits and temperatures drop to winter levels.

WSDOT currently has nearly 400 active construction projects underway around the state thanks to the 2003 and 2005 funding packages approved by the Washington State legislature.  Check out our construction calendar: www.wsdot.wa.gov/Construction/Calendar/
