NOOKSACK – WSDOT and its contractor IMCO Construction continue to work their way north along State Route 9, rebuilding and widening the highway in sections as they go. Crews will move further north next week and close all lanes of East Badger Road and Easterbrook Road through the month of September to build a new section of roadway for the future SR 9 route.
Crews will close all lanes of East Badger Road between Garrison Road and Telegraph Road, and all lanes of Easterbrook Road between Morgan Road and Front Street for 35 days starting Tuesday, September 5. During the closures, drivers will follow signed detour routes to help them around the closure.
Visit http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/projects/sr9/nooksaktocherry/mapfor a detailed detour map and directions. Drivers should plan ahead and be prepared for delays. Please leave early and allow extra time in your schedule for the detours.
Currently, SR 9 is closed between Nooksack Road and Garrison Road. It has been closed since July 31. Crews will finish this section of roadway this week and will open all lanes to drivers Friday, September 1. Opening the road is weather dependent. Crews must stripe the roadway lanes, but cannot do that if it is raining. If crews are unable to stripe on Wednesday or Thursday, then the highway will remain closed through the weekend and crews will attempt to reopen it on Tuesday, Sept. 5.
This work is part of a larger $17 million project to straighten, widen and smooth the highway between Nooksack and Sumas to make it safer and more accessible year round for both cars and trucks. WSDOT will remove three ninety-degree turns from the highway, build three miles of new highway east of the today’s SR 9, and improve drainage beneath the road surface.
