SUMAS – Starting Wednesday, WSDOT will close lanes during the day on State Route 547 near Sumas to repave three miles of roadway and make safety improvements between Frost Road and Rock Road.

Crews will close one lane from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Flaggers and a pilot car will guide drivers through the work zone.  Drivers should plan ahead and expect delays.

Along with fixing imperfections in the roadway and repaving, crews will repair the Saar Creek Bridge.  Crews will grind off the old asphalt and seal the joints and concrete deck before resurfacing the bridge with asphalt.  They will also install new guardrail that meets current WSDOT standards.

Once paving is complete crews will install new signs and road markings to improve visibility and safety.  The project is anticipated to be completed by mid-September.

This safety project was awarded to Wilder Construction of Bellingham for their low bid of $616,000.
