PIERCE COUNTY Motorists should expect delays of up to 45 minutes on State Route (SR) 161 Aug. 1-3 because of a WSDOT chip seal project.

Crews will chip seal a section of SR 161 starting Tuesday Aug. 1, 06. The section is located between just north of Eatonville (milepost 3.33) and extends to just south of Northwest Trek (milepost 8.95).

Chip sealing involves applying a layer of fresh oil and gravel to the road surface. Motorists will encounter delays associated with the oil and gravel application on the first day, and by sweeping operations that remove excess gravel on the second day.

The work, which is dependent upon good weather, will be done between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. During work hours, motorists will be restricted to a single lane with a pilot car guiding traffic through the work zone. The speed limit through the work areas will be reduced to 35 mph until approximately August 10 because of loose gravel.

SR 161 job is one of a seven-location, three-county, chip seal project awarded to Doolittle Construction of Bellevue for $2.8 million.

For more information about the work on SR 161, contact Gary Conner, WSDOT field engineer, at (360) 533-9352.
