MASON COUNTYMotorists should expect delays of up to 45 minutes from July 31 to August 2 as the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) finishes a chip seal project on State Route (SR) 106.

Crews will chip seal the final section of SR 106 starting at Twanoh State Park and extending to the intersection of SR 106 and SR 3 just south of Belfair (milepost 12.21 to 19.90). The first section of SR 106 (milepost 0.00 to 4.85) is being done July 27-29.

Chip sealing involves applying a layer of fresh oil and gravel to the road surface. Motorists will encounter delays associated with the oil and gravel application on the first day, and by sweeping operations that remove excess gravel on the second day.

The work, which is dependent upon good weather, will be done between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. During work hours, motorists will be restricted to a single lane with a pilot car guiding traffic through the work zone. The speed limit through the work areas will be reduced to 35 mph until approximately August 10 because of loose gravel.

Additionally, Beginning Aug.1, WSDOT will decrease the existing 55 mph speed limit on SR 106 from approximately Webb Hill Road and E. Main Street (mileposts 2.06 4.85) to 45 mph. The reduction will make the 45 mph zone continuous, starting at the junction of US 101 and continuing east for 4.85 miles.
