GIG HARBOR - Motorists who use eastbound State Route 16 west of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge are advised to make alternate travel plans during upcoming tests of electronic toll equipment that will be used to collect tolls on the new bridge.

During the tests, eastbound SR 16 traffic will be reduced to one lane near 36th Street NW and rerouted through the far right tollbooth lane in the toll plaza. An advisory speed reduction of 15 miles per hour will be posted at the toll plaza area.

The lane closures and eastbound realignment will occur as follows:

  • 12:01 a.m. through 10 a.m. Sunday, July 30 and
  • 9 p.m. Tuesday, August 1, through 4 a.m. Wednesday, August 2

A previous equipment test performed with the same traffic control resulted in lengthy delays for eastbound motorists. As a result, the lane closure hours were modified for the two upcoming tests. However, drivers are encouraged to postpone discretionary trips or take alternate routes if at all possible while the testing process is underway.

Westbound traffic will not be affected by the above work.

More tests will occur in August, and those times and dates will be announced as they are scheduled.
