Mount Rainer Park Officials Alert Drivers to State Route 123 Closure Next Tuesday and Wednesday Mornings

Date:  Friday, July 28, 2006

Contact: Eric Walkinshaw, 360-569-2166

Mount Rainier National Park: Officials with Mount Rainier National Park and Washington State Department of Transportation will close a short section of State Route 123, the road that serves the east entrance to Mount Rainier National Park. During the closure, crews will install a deep drainage culvert. This effort is part of a two-year project to rehabilitate 3.4 miles of SR 123. The program is anticipated to be completed by Sept. 30, 2006.

Crews will close SR 123, just north of Stevens Canyon Road intersection (approx. five miles north of US 12 @ Milepost 5) and at Cayuse Pass (intersection with SR 410 at Milepost 16), Tuesday, Aug. 1 and Wednesday Aug. 2 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

SR 123 serves the east side of the park, extending for approximately 16 miles from its intersection with U.S. 12 at the south end to its intersection with SR 410 at the north end. SR 123 also provides access to the east entrance of the park via the Stevens Canyon Road that connects the east side of the park to the west side and the popular Paradise area. Aside from these temporary six-hour closures, SR 123 will remain open with 20-minute delays to be anticipated through the construction area.

Temporary road closure signs will be installed at strategic locations both inside and outside the park to warn travelers. Thank you for your cooperation and patience.
