WSF to Hold Public Meetings on the New Anacortes Multimodal Ferry Terminal

Date:  Friday, June 16, 2006

Contact: Joy Goldenberg, 206-515-3411

(ANACORTES) - The public is invited to attend two open houses-in Anacortes and on the Inter-Island boat-to learn about plans for the new Anacortes Multimodal Ferry Terminal Project and to provide comments on the terminal building concepts. The existing facility cannot accommodate future growth, needs an additional slip to increase efficiency in maintenance and operations, and has a terminal building that is in poor condition. Meeting details:

Anacortes
Wednesday, June 21
5:30-7:00 PM
Anacortes City Hall
904 6th St.

On the Inter-Island Boat
Thursday, June 22
3:50-6:55 PM
(departing Lopez at 3:50 PM, departing Friday Harbor at 5:35 PM)

"The Anacortes terminal is an essential transportation link for Anacortes and the San Juan Islands, as well as for tourists," said Mike Anderson, WSF Executive Director. "We are extremely pleased to be moving forward with much-needed improvements that will increase access, service reliability, and safety at the terminal."

The upper parking lot was completed in spring 2005. Other project elements are in the design phase. Due to budget and regulatory considerations, project elements will be built in phases, starting with replacement of the dolphins in 2006-07, construction of the terminal building and pick-up/drop-off loop in 2007-09,  addition of vehicle access to Slip 3 in 2008 and site circulation improvements breaking ground in 2010. The project is funded in the amount of $119 million; over half of the funds come from the state highways nickel tax.

Key features of the project include:

A new terminal building with improved waiting areas, concessions and other amenities.

Rebuilt tie-up slips, located further off-shore to encourage eel grass growth and accommodate larger vessels in the future.

New operational slip to avoid service disruptions during maintenance, and to increase flexibility of service.

Improved traffic flow while the vessel is being loaded and unloaded.

Rebuilt and expanded passenger overhead loading to ensure ease of use for persons with limited mobility.

Bicycle lanes and sidewalks connecting the terminal building to the holding lanes.

Improvements to meet new security requirements.

The public may also submit comments by mail or e-mail to Washington State Ferries, Attn: Joy Goldenberg, Customer & Community Relations, 2911 2nd Ave., Seattle, WA 98121, or anacortesproject@wsdot.wa.gov.  For more information about the project, visit http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/projects/anacortesterminal.
