Monday, June 26:

  • 4 a.m.: NE 179th Street on-ramp opens, all lanes of I-5 between 179th Street and 134th Street open

During the nighttime complete closures of I-5 southbound between the I-205 junction and NE 134th Street, southbound I-5 traffic will be directed to use an alternate route via I-205 southbound. The NE 134th Street on-ramp will remain open.

During the daytime single lane closures between NE 179th Street and the I-205 junction, the center lane will be closed. Prior to NE 179th Street, signs will be in place alerting motorists traveling south on I-5 to use the left lane, while motorists traveling to I-205 southbound will be directed to use the right lane.

The closure is necessary so crews working on the I-5, I-205 to North Fork Lewis River Concrete Rehabilitation project can safely repair concrete. Concrete on I-5 at the I-205 split has deteriorated, and because the work is so close to the split, crews must completely shut down this section of I-5 to safely complete the work. Due to heavy traffic and safety needs, the 179th Street on-ramp to southbound I-5 will be closed throughout the weekend. Additional crews have been added to enable this work to be completed in one weekend.

Advanced warning signs will be posted ahead of the closure, and motorists are asked to please slow down and use caution when driving past the closure area. WSDOT urges motorists to drive safely throughout the project area. The designated speed limit in this construction area is 55 MPH. Vehicles with trailers and trucks over 10,000 pounds are required to use right lane between LaCenter (milepost 16.5) and NE 179th Street (milepost 9.5).Washington State Patrol will be on site and diligently enforcing aggressive driving and speeding motorists. Motorists are also reminded that all traffic fines are doubled within a construction work zone when workers are present (RCW 46.61.527).

WSDOT thanks motorists for bearing with us while we work to improve our roadway system. For more information about the I-5, I-205 to North Fork Lewis River Concrete Rehabilitation project, please visit the Web page: www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/I5/NorthForkLewisRiverBridge/
