SEATTLE –  Starting Monday night WSDOT will continue work to reduce the risk of head-on collisions on Puget Sound-area highways.

In this latest project WSDOT and contractor Petersen Brothers of Sumner will install median barrier on State Route 18 east of Auburn and SR 99 in South Seattle. On Monday night, June 12, crews will begin work to install guardrail on SR 18 between the bridges over Auburn Black Diamond Road and Green River.  Drivers can expect overnight single lane closures between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Later this month crews will move to the northwest and install cable barrier on SR 99 between SR 599 and Holden Street in South Seattle.  The SR 99 work will require daytime single lane closures between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.  WSDOT expects to complete the project this July.

Last month WSDOT completed a separate project in which crews installed 38 miles of cable median barrier in 11 separate locations across the Puget Sound area.  WSDOT installed the cable barrier in locations vulnerable to crossover collisions.  For more information about the median barrier project visit www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/CableBarrier.  The 2005 Transportation Funding Package provides money from new gas taxes for these projects.

Drivers can now get real time traffic and weather information by dialing 5-1-1 from most phones. This new traveler information system builds upon the highly successful Washington State Highway hotline that managed 4.6 million calls each year.  Callers can also use 5-1-1 to get statewide construction, mountain pass condition, and state ferry system information, as well as toll free numbers for passenger rail and airlines. TTY users can call 1-800-833-6388.
