WSDOT to Update Airport and Compatible Land Use Guidebook

Incompatible development near airports is one of the most crucial threats to our state’s aviation system. The Growth Management Act requires local jurisdictions to develop policies that recognize airports as essential public facilities. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is tasked by the Legislature to provide technical assistance to jurisdictions and airport sponsors to assist in adopting comprehensive plans and development regulations to protect airports. These efforts have contributed to proactive land use compatibility programs for 65 of Washington State’s 129 public-use airports.

WSDOT is now beginning a process to update its existing airport land use compatibility guidelines and related program materials as part of its technical assistance program. The final document will serve as a handbook on airport land use compatibility planning for elected officials, local planning professionals, airport sponsors, and interested citizens. The purpose of the guidebook is to:

  • Provide step-by-step guides for land use planners and airport managers
  • Identify the objectives and policies of WSDOT’s Airport Land Use Compatibility Program
  • Describe the technical assistance services offered by WSDOT
  • Revise land use guidelines
  • Assemble aviation data and background research

In this update, WSDOT will focus on providing summaries, graphics, worksheets and other tools to help communicate technical information. Our goal is to better assist jurisdictions in developing comprehensive plan policies and regulations pursuant to growth management that protect airports and the long-term interests of aviation. The project will be completed by summer 2007.
