NASELLE – The Dismal Nitch Safety Area on State Route 401, formerly known as Megler Safety Rest Area, one mile east of the US 101 Astoria-Megler Bridge, will reopen to the public by 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 1, announced the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). Effective on this date, it will operate non-stop, 24 hours a day, until the following winter.
The state-owned rest area was closed for the winter season on January 17, 2005. It is closed every year at this time due to the negative effects heavy winter rainstorms have on the rest area’s water system.
