STELLA – State Route 4 reopened today , after a brief closure between 12:15 p.m. and 4 p.m., due to a safety concern, announced the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). The road will be open for thirty minutes this afternoon at 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. and will close for the night until 7:30 a.m. The following are the scheduled times of opening:

  • 7:30 a.m. – 8 a.m. – Open (Tuesday, 02/14/06 Only)
  • 10 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. – Open
  • 12 noon – 12:15 p.m. – Open
  • 2 p.m. – 2:15 p.m. – Open
  • 4 p.m. – 4:15 p.m. – Open
  • 5:30 p.m. – 8 a.m. - Open

Flaggers, state patrol troopers and safety spotters are on site to ensure maximum safety to the traveling public in this area. Due to the safety precautions taken, motorists are advised that the timeline for opening the road is subject to change at any time.

The earlier closure had occurred because a large rock dislodged from the face of the slope. The work was being performed during the closure and did not compromise the safety of the public.

WSDOT asks that citizens call the hotline, 1-800-545-1393 to get the most updated information on the status of SR 4.

Three contractors, Ostrander Rock & Construction Co., Hi-Tech Rockfall Construction and Pacific Blasting Company, have been working to stabilize the slope and clear the slide. Work on the slope will continue until the surrounding slope on the north side of the roadway is deemed safe for those traveling on the roadway below.

The slide happened during the windy conditions on February 4. The impacted section of the highway is at mile post 50 near Bunker Hill.
