MASON COUNTY - The Washington State Department of Transportation will reopen State Route 106 on Thursday, Dec. 15, following completion of a 120-foot single-span bridge over Skobob Creek.
The new bridge, located on the Skokomish Indian Reservation, replaces an existing 6-foot by 6-foot culvert that was considered a barrier to migrating salmon.
In addition to building the new bridge, the project restored the creek channel to a more natural state, which will benefit more than 500 acres of wetlands and reduce flooding impacts. Skobob Creek has flooded SR 106 six times since 1997, most recently in October 2003.
The project was funded from the 2003 nickel gas tax increase and was undertaken in cooperation with the Skokomish Tribal Nation and the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group.
