BURLINGTON: WSDOT and its contractor Peterson Brothers will start construction and lane closures on Interstate 5 in Blaine on Monday, Dec. 12. Crews will spend two weeks installing new cable guardrail to help prevent crossover and head-on accidents.

Crews will install more than two miles of new cable guardrail in the median of I-5 between Dakota Creek and State Route 548.

Lane Closures

  • Crews will work daylight hours, Monday through Friday, starting Monday, Dec. 12, and plan to finish by Wednesday, Dec. 21.
  • Crews will close one center lane as necessary in either the northbound or southbound direction during the day.

WSDOT will install cable guardrail to help prevent head on collisions caused by drivers crossing the median and entering oncoming traffic. Cable guardrail significantly reduces the number of fatal and disabling accidents.

This work, paid for with gas tax money from the 2005 Legislative Transportation Funding Package, is part of a larger $8.8 million project to install approximately 70 miles of cable guardrail in eight counties and on nine separate highways across Washington to help prevent crossover and head-on accidents.
