BURLINGTON - Crews will close all lanes of Memorial Highway (State Route 536) in downtown Mount Vernon at night this week to pave the road. This work is part of a larger project that built the wider and taller 2nd Street Bridge over Interstate 5 in Mount Vernon.

Closure
Dec. 6 and Dec. 7
- crews will close Memorial Highway each night from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. between Montgomery Street and 1st Street.

WSDOT will provide a signed detour via Kincaid Street and 1st Street to help drivers navigate around the closure.  Drivers should plan ahead and allow extra time for travel. This work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled as necessary. Crews are unable to pave in the rain.

Crews finished installing a new drainage system along Memorial Highway and are now ready to pave the road.

WSDOT opened the new 2nd Street Bridge over I-5 to traffic at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 18 after one year of construction. The new bridge is wider, taller and safer than the bridge it replaced.

The $14 million project is on schedule and budget. Construction work will be complete in spring 2006. WSDOT was able to build the new bridge thanks to the 2003 Washington State Legislature who approved $12 million in funding from the Transportation Funding Package.
