SEATTLE - Lengthy backups will improve and drivers can turn left more safely onto State Route 530 with the installation of a new traffic signal at Arlington Heights Road. WSDOT will activate a new traffic signal tomorrow to improve traffic flow and enhance safety at this intersection. The traffic signal is part of a $2.6 million project that widens the intersection and adds left and right-turn lanes to help relieve heavy traffic congestion on Arlington Heights Road.
Located just north of Arlington, the SR 530/Arlington Heights Road intersection has a history of collisions and congestion due to the high volumes of traffic. More than 15,000 vehicles travel through this intersection every day. This intersection could not safely handle the heavy traffic without help from a signal. As the traffic counts continued to grow, more and more left-turning vehicles were getting involved in accidents. Too keep drivers safe and traffic moving, WSDOT installed a signal along with left and right-turn lanes.
And we’re almost finished improving this intersection. Next spring, we’ll return to finish resurfacing the pavement to provide drivers with a smooth and safe driving surface. The new traffic lights will improve access to and from SR 530 and Arlington Heights Road for the nearly 15,000 vehicles that use it everyday. The new turn-lanes will remove turning vehicles from through-traffic lanes, which reduces the likelihood of rear-end collisions.
