SEATTLE – Drivers who use State Route 9 and US 2 can now check the commute before they hit the road. The Washington State Department of Transportation turned on two new traffic cameras on Wednesday, Dec. 21 at the intersection of SR 9 and US 2 in Snohomish County. These new cameras show both north and southbound views of SR 9.

“This is great news for travelers in the Snohomish area. Motorists can now use our Web site to view actual traffic conditions at the intersection of SR 9 and US 2 before they leave home or work,” said WSDOT Project Engineer Dave Lindberg.

WSDOT added these cameras as part of an intersection realignment project at the intersection of SR 9 and US 2. According to traffic engineers, these cameras are the first of many that will be installed to cover the once rural route.

“Our goal is to install enough cameras to provide drivers with accurate travel information. We would like to have a camera at every mile along the length of State Route 9,” said Snohomish County Traffic Engineer Dongho Chang. “As new projects are built along this road, we will look at adding cameras to the critical intersections.”

Snohomish County drivers can also look forward to four new cameras on US 2 in Monroe at the intersections of SR 522, Kelsey Street, Lewis Street/Chain Lake Road and Main Street/Old Owen Road. Additionally, there will be two more cameras on SR 522 at the Fales Road/Echo Lake Road intersection. These cameras should be working by late spring/early summer 2006.
