SHINE - Travelers crossing the State Route 104 Hood Canal Bridge have more room to maneuver. The Washington State Department of Transportation lifted lane restrictions today on the Hood Canal Bridge when the contractor, Kiewit-General of Poulsbo, removed the old barrier gate and completed roadway striping.

Lane widths increased from 11 feet to 12 feet. West-half roadway shoulders are now 8 feet, providing room for disabled vehicles to pull off the roadway and to allow traffic to move smoothly around them.

Last year K-G extended the south side. This year, K-G finished widening the north half. The work included forming deck sections, pouring concrete for the new deck, pouring concrete traffic barrier, installing railings, widening the west half steel draw span and installing new traffic and barrier gates.

The bridge's west half was widened to match the new east half. The new east half installation is scheduled during a May-June 2009 Hood Canal Bridge closure.

Site work continues, however, as K-G crews install guardrail, remove old approach span piers, complete electrical work, remove work trestles and install expansion joints.
