SHINE – The Washington State Department of Transportation and its contractor, Kiewit-General of Poulsbo, reopened the State Route 104 Hood Canal Bridge at 10:20 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 13.

The bridge closed to traffic Thursday, Aug. 11, to allow WSDOT’s contractor, Kiewit-General of Poulsbo, to replace the 2.2 million pound, 190-foot-long west end approach span. The lack of problems with the bridge deck rolls has helped move the weekend-long closure ahead of schedule. WSDOT also used unique techniques – such as pre-cast walls and roadway sections – to accommodate a shorter closure.

The same operation will take place at the bridge’s east end Aug. 21-25. The east span is 640-feet long, three times longer than the span moved this weekend so WSDOT officials believe the second closure is likely to use the entire 80-hour closure to complete.

Detailed construction progress updates are posted on-line throughout the closure weekend at www.hoodcanalbridge.com. Project information also is available by calling 877-595-HCB2.
