SHINE - Crews completed critical elements of the State Route 104 Hood Canal Bridge east approach span replacement last night, meaning the bridge is likely to open ahead of its Thursday morning deadline.

Increased crew size helped the contractor, Kiewit-General of Poulsbo, move ahead on the approach slab work at the same time as pier demolition and the new approach span roll. Coordinating the work in this manner has helped move the closure ahead of schedule.

Work Tuesday includes securing the deck at three more of the six piers, installing the joint between the new approach span and the transition span, installing new roadway approach slabs (the road leading to the new bridge deck), paving and striping.

WSDOT maintenance crews report no traffic problems along US 101, the alternate driving route. Travelers can find land, air and water options for getting to and from the peninsula at www.hoodcanalbridge.com.

Detailed construction progress updates will be posted on-line throughout the closure weekend at www.hoodcanalbridge.com.  Project information also will be available by calling 877-595-HCB2.
