SHINE - Work is progressing smoothly for the second three-day State Route 104 Hood Canal Bridge closure that began last night, Aug. 21. The 640-foot, 7.6 million pound eastern approach span is moving slowly but steadily. Crews estimate this roll will be complete by 7 a.m. today.
Traffic across the Hood Canal Bridge slowed to a trickle in the minutes leading up to the 8 p.m. Sunday closure deadline. Within minutes, the contractor - Kiewit-General of Poulsbo - began the preliminary work that led to rolling off the old approach span starting at approximately 3 a.m.
Once Kiewit-General crews roll the new roadway in place, work turns to securing the deck at all six piers, installing an expansion joint, installing new approach slabs (the road leading to the new bridge deck) and paving.
WSDOT maintenance crews report no traffic problems along US 101, the alternate driving route. Travelers can find land, air and sea options for getting to and from the peninsula at www.hoodcanalbridge.com.
Detailed construction progress updates will be posted online throughout the closure weekend at www.hoodcanalbridge.com. Project information also will be available by calling 877-595-HCB2.
