VANCOUVER - The Washington State Department of Transportation
(WSDOT) and the Clark County Public Works Department (CCPW) will host
a public open house for the Salmon Creek Interchange project on Wednesday,
June 22, 2005.
The open house will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the WSU Vancouver Student
Services Building Room 130, 14204 N.E. Salmon Creek Avenue in Vancouver.
Free parking will be available after 5 p.m. in Red Lot 3. There will be
no formal presentations, so the public can come by any time.
The Salmon Creek Interchange Project is a joint effort between WSDOT
and CCPW that will relieve congestion and improve safety in this fast-growing
area. The project includes:
>> connecting N.E. 139th Street between N.E. 10th Avenue
and N.E. 20th Avenue
>> widening N.E. 139th Street between N.E. Tenney Road and
the Legacy Hospital entrance east of N.E. 20th Avenue
>> constructing a new I-5 interchange at N.E. 139th Street
>> redesigning access to I-205 southbound from N.E. 134th
Street
>> widening N.E. 10th Avenue from N.E. 134th Street to N.E.
149th Street
This month, the project team is beginning an environmental assessment
for the project, which is a process required by the federal government
that complies with the National Environmental Protection Act of 1969 (NEPA)
and the Washington State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA). The environmental
assessment will study how both a build alternative and a no-build alternative
would affect both the natural and built environment. The natural environment
includes water, air, wetlands and wildlife. The built environment includes
historic and cultural resources, community connectivity, noise, and property
acquisition.
The open house on June 22 will provide the public with an opportunity
to:
>> Review the recommended build alternative and make suggestions
about what should be studied during the
environmental assessment.
>> Learn about other alternatives considered and suggest
anything that may have been overlooked.
>> Learn about the environmental assessment process.
>> Find out how to stay involved as the project moves forward.
